Travel disruption is set to continue for a further day as snow and ice persist across large parts of the country.

Airports, roads and rail networks, already disrupted by the weekend's widespread snow, will have more wintry weather to cope with on Tuesday.

Up to 10cm (4in)of snow is forecast for parts of Scotland and northern England.

About 2cm could fall in East Anglia, followed by around 6cm in southern England on Tuesday night.

Overnight temperatures fell to -11.3C in Buckinghamshire and -10C at Stansted Airport.

The Met Office has warned of icy stretches "just about anywhere" as the cold snap continues.

More than 120 schools have been closed and drivers are being warned of dangerous conditions as further heavy snowfalls hit Scotland.

Grampian Police asked motorists not to travel unless absolutely necessary, after drifting snow overnight.

Met Office "be prepared" warnings remain in place in eastern, central and southern areas of Scotland.

Winds could reach up to gale force, with up to 20cm of snow predicted to fall on higher ground.

It has issued a yellow warning of snow for the south west of England and a yellow early warning for the far north east.

In Northern Ireland, 5cm-10cm of snow has fallen since Monday, with the bulk of it lying over counties Antrim and Down.

There could be another 2cm to 5cm of fresh snow on Tuesday morning, mainly in the east.

Airport cancellations

Heathrow Airport has already warned passengers to expect cancellations and delays following its cancellation of 200 flights on Monday.

A Heathrow spokesman said: "Because Heathrow runs at almost 100% capacity there is no slack in the system and flights unfortunately have to be cancelled. Further cancellations are inevitable given the adverse weather conditions at other airports around Europe."

Gatwick and Birmingham have also experienced delays. Rail operators including Gatwick Express and Southeastern also reported cancellations and revised timetables on Tuesday.

Eurostar cancelled some services and warned passengers to expect delays of up to an hour as speed restrictions were imposed as a result of snow and ice.

The East Coast rail services in England have also been disrupted, with delays of up to 40 minutes to East Coast services between London Kings Cross and Berwick-upon-Tweed, Hull and Leeds.

There have been school closures:

  • In Wales, more than 300 schools are closed, mostly in the south-east, including 29 shut in Merthyr Tydfil, 34 in Torfaen, 47 in Cardiff and most in Caerphilly.

Monday saw hundreds of schools closed. While many children enjoyed sledging, injuries were reported by ambulance services.

Sixteen-year-old Liam Stafford remained critically ill in hospital after hitting a tree while sledging in Normanby, Middlesbrough.

East of England Ambulance Service also issued a warning after it was called out to attend at least a dozen sledging-related injuries, including broken bones or head injuries requiring hospital treatment.

The cold conditions have claimed some lives. A Somerset postman died while carrying out his rounds in freezing conditions on Exmoor, Royal Mail has confirmed.

It is believed John Bircham had a heart attack after trying to free his van from a snow drift on Saturday.

And on the A12 in Essex on Monday night a driver died when his car left the road and collided with a tree.
