Heavy snow is causing travel problems for a second day after hundreds of drivers were stranded in their cars overnight in southern England.

Cross-Channel Eurostar train services are disrupted with severe delays due to bad weather in northern France.

Sussex Police dealt with more than 300 collisions across the county in 24 hours, with drivers spending the night on the M23 in Sussex and A23 in Kent.

Airports in the Channel Islands are still closed following heavy snow.

In Sussex tailbacks of up to 15 miles were reported on the A23 between Crawley and Brighton, with some motorists stuck for up to eight hours, with many abandoning their cars.

More than 100 people were stuck for more than four hours in Kent after a lorry jack-knifed in snow and ice.

In other developments:

  • Schools across Sussex, Kent and the Channel Islands are closed as conditions remain too treacherous for teachers and pupils to travel
  • A number of roads remain closed, including the A27 at Worthing in West Sussex and the A259 at Beachy Head in East Sussex
  • Cross-Channel ferries are operating "as far as possible" but passengers are advised to allow extra time to reach ports due to poor conditions on the A2 and A20 in Kent
  • Gatwick Airport is warning people to allow extra time for their journeys due to the problems on the roads
  • Guernsey and Jersey Airports are shut due to snow, with 10cm (4in) of snow on the runway in Guernsey
  • Two people were trapped under a tree which fell during blizzards in Jersey

Police in Sussex said the force had been "stretched to capacity" overnight but the focus was now recovering abandoned vehicles.

Drivers spoke of taking several hours to complete short journeys, while a party of 120 German students had to be put up in Hastings town hall in East Sussex for the night when families due to look after them were unable to reach them.

Chief Inspector Phil Nicholas from the Road Policing Unit said: "Many people fell asleep in their cars or abandoned them so even when the roads did become clearer they were still blocked by many vehicles.

"Although the conditions have improved slightly, we are asking people to not make any journeys unless they are essential."
