Dozens of people were evacuated from their homes in the early hours after a gas main caught fire in Birmingham.

At least 45 people were led to safety at the scene in Coney Green Drive, Longbridge, the fire service said.

The incident happened at about 01:40 BST and residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly after 06:00 BST, police said.

A man, who was taken to hospital, has been arrested on suspicion of starting the fire. There were no other injuries.

Gas leak

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a gas main trench, where they found a man lying on the ground unconscious.

Emergency services set up a 50m cordon around the trench.

A gas leak was reported in an adjoining road, Hawkesley Crescent, and officers set up a further cordon.

A fire service spokesman said earlier that emergency services were working with the gas supplier to repair the leak so the fire could be put out.

West Midlands Police declared it a "critical incident" due to the impact on the community and police resources.

Roads were closed and extra police officers were called in to assist.
