The provisional date for the Old Bailey trial of the man charged with the murder of PC Keith Blakelock has been set.

Nicholas Jacobs, 44, of Hackney, will appear at the court on 4 March over the murder of the PC who died during north London riots in 1985.

The 40-year-old Met Police officer was attacked while on duty during the unrest at Broadwater Farm in Tottenham.

Mr Jacobs appeared via video-link from Belmarsh prison in south east London.

Wearing a dark blue tracksuit top with stripes on the sleeves and red trousers, he spoke only to confirm his name.

No application for bail was made and he was remanded in custody to appear for a plea hearing in the week beginning 28 October.

He was represented by Courtenay Griffiths QC.

Prosecutors announced on Tuesday that Mr Jacobs had been charged over PC Blakelock's death.

The police officer was stabbed to death on 6 October 1985 as he and his colleague PC Richard Coombes tried to protect firefighters tackling a blaze at a supermarket.

The disorder was sparked by the death of Cynthia Jarrett who collapsed and died during a police raid on her home.

The case is expected to last up to six weeks.
