Third man found in slavery inquiry

A third man has been found by police in an anti-slavery inquiry in south Wales.

Gwent Police confirmed they found a 60-year-old British man to an address in St Brides, Newport. He is being assessed by specialist Red Cross staff.

Three people have been arrested bringing the total being questioned by police to seven.

On Monday a Polish man was found at Cariad Farm in nearby Peterstone, Newport. Earlier this year a British man was found at the same site.

Darrell Simester, 43, from Kidderminster, Worcestershire was discovered after going missing 13 years ago while on holiday in the south Wales resort of Porthcawl.

It sparked a major police inquiry which led to dawn raids at three sites in south Wales on Monday.

At one of them, Cariad Farm which is listed by Newport Council as a gypsy/traveller site, a man was found living in poor conditions.

Body search

The four arrested on Monday - a 66-year-old man and a 42-year-old both from the Marshfield area, a 36-year-old man from the Cardiff area, and a 42-year-old woman from Penhow - remain in police custody.

As part of the inquiry, police have been searching a compost heap at Cariad Farm following intelligence that a body may be buried there.

They have been searching for three days.

Det Supt Paul Griffiths said: "This is a fast moving and complicated investigation and we are grateful to the public for the continued assistance and support they have shown so far.

"I'm still appealing for anyone with any information to contact us on 101 quoting log 66 23/09/13 .

"Alternatively if anyone has information and would rather not pass this directly to the police then I would urge them to contact Crimestoppers, which is independent of the police and guarantees complete anonymity, on 0800 555 111.

"They don't need to give their name and the police will never know who they are. Any information given would be passed to the team in complete confidence.

"I'm also again making a personal plea to the author of an anonymous letter which was sent to another police force making certain allegations and providing information relevant to this inquiry to contact.

"We believe they may have information which could greatly assist us."
