Overall crime in England and Wales fell by 15% in 2013, official figures show.

The level of reported crimes in the Crime Survey for England and Wales was the lowest since it began in 1981.

But police figures showed increases in some areas, with a 25% jump in fraud and a 17% increase in sex offences - attributed in part to publicity surrounding the Jimmy Savile abuse scandal.

Incidents of shoplifting were up 6% and violence against a person rose by 1%.

Victims of crime

The CSEW figures, published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), estimate crime levels based on how many people say they have been victim of a crime.

Separate figures show the police recorded 3.7 million offences in the year ending December 2013 - down 2% from the previous year.

The CSEW estimated there were 7.5 million crimes against households and adults in the year ending in December 2013.

The reduction of crime measured was driven by a fall in offences including household theft, which was down 25% and overall violence, which fell 22%.

Reports of vandalism also fell 15% over the course of the year.

But there were significant increases in other areas, according to the police figures.

The figures do not cover Scotland and Northern Ireland.
