Peaches Geldof had been a heroin addict and took the substitute drug methadone for two-and-a-half years before her death in April, her inquest has heard.
Her husband, musician Tom Cohen, told the hearing in Gravesend the 25-year-old presenter had started using heroin again in February this year.
He added he had witnessed her flushing drugs she had hidden in their home down the toilet.
Geldof's mother, Paula Yates, died of a heroin overdose at the age of 41.
The inquest comes after a toxicology report showed Geldof had heroin in her system.
'Unexplained'
Mr Cohen, whom she married in 2012, is understood to have found his wife's body at their home in Wrotham in Kent after becoming concerned that he could not contact her.
He had been away for the weekend with the elder of their two sons, Astala, leaving Geldof at home with their 11-month old son, Phaedra.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time, police described the death as "sudden and unexplained".
After the toxicology report was issued in May, the police launched a criminal inquiry "into the supply of drugs" in connection with her death.
Speaking about the loss of his daughter last month, musician and campaigner Bob Geldof said his family were "beyond pain".
Peaches Geldof had spoken openly about her struggle to deal with her mother's death - and of experimenting with drugs in her teenage years - but had cited motherhood as a central part of her "healing" process.
Celebrities including Kate Moss, Nick Grimshaw and former Rolling Stone Bill Wyman attended her funeral on 21 April.
Her final tweet, the day before her death, was a picture of her as a child in her mother's arms, with the message: "Me and my mum."
