A 28-year-old man who was shot in west Belfast has died in hospital.

The man, named locally as Edward Gibson, was attacked in lower Falls at 17:10 BST on Friday, in an entry between Divis Street and Clonfaddan Crescent.

Police have arrested two men aged 33 and 30, and a 31-year-old woman.

The 30-year-old man who was arrested was treated in hospital for stab wounds, believed to have been sustained in a related incident.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the attack to contact them.

Det Ch Insp Justyn Galloway said: "I appeal to anyone who was in Clonfaddan Crescent in the Divis area around 5pm yesterday evening and to anyone who was in the Albert Street area around 4.30pm and witnessed a related incident to contact detectives."

Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann told the BBC it was his understanding a "serious fight" had taken place earlier.

A number of hours later, in the aftermath of the alleged fight, residents told Mr McCann a man had been shot.

SDLP councillor Tim Attwood said it was an appalling incident.

"Whatever the circumstances there is no place for the use of guns or violence in our society," he said.

"It is important that any witnesses come forward and give information to the PSNI."
