A man who was dragged along a motorway while trying to stop his van being stolen is critically ill in hospital.
He had stopped to help the driver of an overturned lorry on the M602, near Salford, at about 08:30 GMT on Sunday.
Police said when the 28-year-old got out of his VW Caddy van, leaving his keys in the ignition, the lorry driver jumped in and sped off, dragging the man along. He suffered head injuries.
A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
Det Sgt Julie Connor, of Greater Manchester Police, said the man had been dragged "some distance" along the motorway, before he fell off the front of the van.
"The injured man is in a critical condition at hospital," said Det Sgt Connor.
"We are keen to trace anyone who witnessed this incident and to recover the stolen VW Caddy van, registration number DY14 FPN."
Anyone with any information about what happened, is asked to contact police.
